Spinning your own yarn goes to the next level when you spin your own color-blended yarn without having to take to the dye pot first.

Sunday 1-4

Instructor: Constance Hall

Students will start with colored wool top that will be blended at the wheel. They will make their own colorful punis that, with no tools required, will spin up into amazing yarn. Students will learn how to take indie dyed wool braids and manipulate them so that when spun into yarns will look totally different from each other even though started for the same braid. Finally, students will learn some color blending with tools such as hand cards, hackle and drum carder. This is a fun and information filled workshop that will leave you wondering why you ever thought you had to dye your own fiber to get the colors you dreamed of.

Supplies: A spindle or working wheel, extra bobbins, and lazy kate, niddy noddy and any spinning wheel parts including oil, handcards. Some handcards will be available to borrow. Please bring any tools you would like to use or learn to use.

Materials Fee: $20 Includes fiber supplies for class.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Class Limit: 8

Knitted cord has a multitude of uses and is one of the best items a knitter can have in his or her toolbox. It looks good and gives you a place to hide your ends!

Saturday 9-12

Instructor: Martha Gifreda

Seriously, this versatile and useful technique can be used for ties and lacings; to cast on and off; to make attractive, tidy edges and seams. It’s a great substitute for the crocheted edging. It can add some structure and zing to your finished piece. All this, from one relatively simple technique—truly a workhorse! You will wonder how you ever did without it. During the class, we’ll explore various types of I-cord (round, square, striped, spiral), and various applications (cast on, cast off, selvedge, seam, embellishment, buttonholes, fringe, jewelry). I’m not sure there is such a thing as a project that wouldn’t benefit from I-cord somewhere!

Supplies:Worsted weight yarn in two colors double pointed needles in appropriate size (probably 6, 7, or 8) 3 garter stitch swatches, each at least 4 x 4 from worsted weight yarn

Materials Fee: none Skill Level: Beginner Class Limit: 10

No previous dyeing experience necessary – just a love of color and a sense of adventure! Working together in teams we’ll begin to build a color library, which you can then use to design and dye two skeins of yarn. At the end of the class, you’ll have the start of your own personal color recipe collection and two skeins of yarn that are uniquely yours!

Supplies: Provided by the instructor and included in the materials fee.

Knop yarns have “knots” along their length that pop to the surface of your fabric and lend a nice texture.

Sunday 9-12

Instructor: Carol McFadden

This type of yarn is beautiful when used as weft in a woven piece, and provides a lot of interest on the purl side of a knitted fabric, as the knots of color will ‘pop’ on the surface. The base yarns for this technique will need to be spun up and brought to class.

Slub yarn, or thick-n-thin yarn, is fun to make! If done properly, it will also resist piling and wear well. We will spin the slub yarn in class and ply it with yarn you will spin as homework. Learn how to make these yarns and discuss the pros and cons of using it in your knit/crochet/woven pieces. Instructor will provide spinning fiber for the slub-spinning portion of class.

Supplies: Bring your wheel, extra bobbins, niddy noddy and any tools you use when spinning (threading hook, oil, spare drive band, etc). You will need a half-bobbin of counterclockwise-spun (S-spun) yarn for knot yarns and another half-bobbin of clockwise-spun (Z-spun) yarn for slub yarns. Materials Fee: $5 Skill Level: Must know how to spin on a wheel. Class Limit: 10
